History of the Bridge

Constructed in 1944, the Office Covered Bridge was originally built by the Westfir Lumber Company. Its purpose was to connect the company office with the mill and worker housing across the Willamette River.

The bridge was designed to allow employees, logging trucks, and company vehicles to safely cross the river while remaining protected from the heavy rainfall common in western Oregon. At the time, covered bridges were practical structures that helped shield wooden supports from moisture and decay, extending the lifespan of the bridge.

What makes the Office Covered Bridge especially significant is its size and historical role in Oregon’s timber industry. Measuring approximately 180 feet long, it is believed to be one of the longest covered railroad-style bridges in the United States.

The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, helping preserve it as both a cultural landmark and a piece of the state’s history. Today, it stands as one of the last remaining examples of large-scale covered bridges in Oregon.

The Bridge Today

Although the logging operations that once relied on the bridge are long gone, the Office Covered Bridge continues to serve the community as an active roadway. Passenger vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians regularly use the bridge to cross the river. Its narrow structure and wooden interior create a nostalgic experience that feels like stepping back in time.

The bridge is also a popular stop for cyclists traveling the nearby Aufderheide Scenic Byway and the surrounding mountain roads. Outdoor enthusiasts often pass through the bridge on their way to hiking trails, campgrounds, and scenic recreation areas in the Willamette National Forest.

Because of its striking appearance and forested setting, it has become a favorite location for photography, especially during fall when the surrounding foliage turns vibrant shades of gold and orange.
